Her Father Jamel Is a Basketball Coach

Tessa’s recent acclaim in basketball is largely due to her father, Jamel, who is not only a dedicated parent but also a basketball coach. He instilled in his children a love for the game, starting with the basics of shooting.

He first encouraged his kids a fondness for the gym, before delving into the technicalities of the sport. With a keen interest in improving skills through natural learning, Jamel believes in the power of innate ability. He also often says that children excel in sports when they engage naturally, rather than through rigid training methods. He told Post and Courier,

I like to study things that I’m doing, to get better at them. I’m in the field of natural. It resorts to everything in life, especially sports. Kids are always better when they do things naturally, rather than if somebody trained them.

He continued, “They do what they feel, and your job is to teach them how to do it better.”

Two Of Johnson’s Siblings Are Also Sports Lovers

Tessa has four siblings: three sisters, Rae, Olivia, and Claudia, and a brother, Jeremiah Johnson. Her brother Jeremiah currently plays for St Michael-Albertville Public’s basketball team, the same school where Tessa and her sister Rae also played.

Rae, standing at 5 feet 7 inches tall, had a prolific high school career at St. Michael. During her time there, Tessa’s sister won numerous accolades, including being a finalist for Minnesota’s Miss Basketball.

She later played college basketball at Iowa State. Starting with the 2017-18 season, Rae made an immediate impact by playing in all 31 games. Her notable performances included her career-high 14 points during Iowa State’s game against UC Riverside.

She averaged 8.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game during the 2019-20 season.

Off the court, Rae, who celebrates her birthday on August 2, pursued a degree in communication studies.
