This news came just one week shy of the 2024 NFL Draft, a professional turn Amitral had eagerly anticipated since December 2023. The University of Albany expressed their deep sorrow in a statement, describing AJ as a tremendous individual and an exceptional teammate during his tenure.

“The UAlbany football program was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former student-athlete Amitral ‘AJ’ Simon this morning,” the statement read. “He was a role model both on and off the field, serving as a pillar to this program over the last two years. He will be profoundly missed.”

Greg Gattuso, Albany’s coach, also shared his personal grief on X,

Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.

The specific cause of Simon’s death has not yet been disclosed.

He Was An Excellent High School and College Footballer

Simon, born and raised in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, excelled in athletics from an early age. He went to Pocono Mountain West High School and played both football and basketball. On the football field, he donned jersey number 9, playing as a running back, defensive end, and middle linebacker. On the basketball court, he wore number 21, playing forward.

After graduating in 2017, AJ continued his football career at Bloomsburg University. Standing 6 feet 2 inches tall, he made an immediate impact as a freshman for the Huskies. Over the season, he appeared in ten games, accumulating 20 total tackles, 3.5 sacks, two quarterback hits, and a pass breakup. His standout performances included multiple solos and assisted tackles across various games.

In 2021, Simon’s relentless effort earned him a spot on the First Team All-Conference.

AJ later transferred to the University of Albany, where he maintained his defensive prowess. In the 2022 season, he participated in nine games, marked by significant plays such as recording six tackles against Rhode Island, two sacks against Baylor, and an interception against Hampton. He completed the season with 30 tackles and five sacks.

As a defensive lineman, AJ, who belonged to African-American ethnicity, harbored aspirations of joining the 2024 NFL Draft.
