NY Times Profiles The Roots
The Roots’ daily gig as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon doesn’t keep them from playing huge shows in Prospect Park or DJ-ing in Williamsburg. Melena Ryzik reports. Pretty good profile piece on a day in the life of The Roots.
Wiz Khalifa Reacts to Winning “Breakthrough MC Award” on MTV2
Wiz big ups his fans for voting him as the Breakthrough MC for MTV2′s sucker free awards, which, ultimately, doesn’t really mean anything. I guess, if anything, it gives a good indication who has the most dedicated fanbase.

Pusha T Co-Signs Tabi Bonney
Pusha T of The Clipse Co-Signs Tabi Bonney & his mixtape “A Place Called Stardom”. Tabi’s real dope and I’ve been following his work for a while. I don’t necessarily see super stardom in his future, but I think he can get a real solid following outside of DC.

Short Film by Converse Featuring Kid Cudi
This summer, Converse further activates its commitment to being a catalyst for creativity by bringing together three extraordinary musicians from different genres to form a unique collaboration known as Three Artists. One Song. The nucleus of this initiative is a brand new, all original track featuring Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend and Kid Cudi that will be released this July and available to music fans globally via free download at converse.com and authorized Converse websites around the world. In addition to collaborating on the track, each of the artists also participated in the creation of the music video, which will be released later this summer.
“Kid Cudi is one of today’s most innovative artists,” said Geoff Cottrill, Chief Marketing Officer of Converse. “His eclectic style and ability to weave timeless samples effortlessly into his own music sets him apart from his peers. At Converse, we always champion creativity and if his past collaborative efforts are any indication, the creative freshness he will bring to the new single is sure to make the song an instant summer hit.”
In anticipation of the song’s release, each artist is also featured in a short film, with the second installment exploring Kid Cudi’s life, and the influences that make him one of today’s most pioneering artists. The film captures Cudi exploring his native Cleveland and provides a unique look into his artistic journey.
Mistah FAB & Ya Boy In The Studio
Alotta ‘In the Studio’ type vids today, but I actually like these because it gives you some insight in to projects and places you in a space where many don’t have the opportunity to enter. Bay Area!!!!!
Money Making Jam Boys In the Studio
First off, I gotta say that the Money Making Jam Boys are really dope together. They have a great sound and different styles, but for one reason or another, they all complement each other. I saw them at The Roots Picnic and they definitely did their thing.
Second off, make sure to check them out. Unfortunately, they’re all based on the east coast between Philly and NYC, but they’re just so live and talented. Included in the group are Dice Raw, STS, Black Thought (The Roots), PORN, and Truck North.
YRB Interviews Jackie Chain
Via YRB:
“Recently, Jackie Chain traveled to NYC to open up a show in Nokia theater for Lloyd Banks and Talib Kweli. The next morning his name made the NY Times paper and was proclaimed the night’s shining act. Mr. V.I.P. sat down with YRB to tell us about that Alabama sound, his pleasure house crew and how a rapper from Huntsville made the big city lights.”
“Tightrope” (Remix) Music Video Footage
A quick look at the making of the “Tightrope” remix featuring Lupe, B.O.B. and, of course, Janelle Monae. Looking forward to this collabo video. Download the track below:

Snoop Dogg the Jedi
A while back I remember Adidas and Snoop were launching the Star Wars themed sneakers in NYC with a bunch of stormtroopers. Looks like Adidas is following up in that campaign, releasing this pretty funny promo video. Aside from Snoop, guests include David Beckham, Daft Punk, Franz Beckenbauer, Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel and DJ Neil Armstrong.
Chamillionaire Lies About Home Forclosure
Sorry bro, but no one purposely does that so they can have their home repossessed. Good try, though. Via TMZ:
A Houston mansion owned by rapper Chamillionaire was repossessed by the bank recently after the place went into foreclosure — but according to the rapper, it was all part of a calculated business decision.
TMZ has learned Chamillionaire lost the 7,583 sq. foot home — which he picked up for roughly $2 million back in 2006 — after failing to make several payments.
But, yesterday in New York we spoke with Chamillionaire — real name Hakeem Seriki — who told us he “decided to let that house go” because the real estate market had turned and the house had become a bad investment.
Chamillionaire also noted that he was never at the home because, “I was always on the road touring” adding, “I just didn’t feel like it was a good business investment to pay that much mortgage for a house I was never at.”
But Chamillionaire claims he’s far from broke — quipping, “I still got all the cars.”
Hip Hop Journalists Weigh in on “Power”
I’m really not cynical when it comes to Kanye West’s music (because I like a good portion, besides 808′s & Heartbreak), but aside from the overall aura and instrumental portion of the track, I’m not that blown away by any of the lyrics, punchlines or concepts rapped. Then again, people need to stop overanalyzing and breaking down tracks like this and just enjoy them for what they are.
Let’s just put it this way – there would be NO MTV News segments and Complex Mag articles weighing in on this track if it were the exact same instrumental, aura, type of rapping and lyrics – but it belonged to someone like Rhymefest. Just sayin……
