Following the death of Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch, Licensed to Ill sold 19k copies and entered on to the Billboard charts at #18. Collectively, the trio’s albums sold 55,000 last week — up 1,235% from 4,000 the previous week. Although it’s great that the music gets sold, I hate it that it takes the passing of […]
Big congrats to J.Cole. After a major Grammy nomination and his album going gold, he now has a single with platinum sales – “Work Out.” I feel like the reaction to this single was relatively lackluster (in the hip hop blog world, at least), so this is a great achievement.
***UPDATE: Final Soundscan figures is a little below, but still solid: 631,466 Like his music? Hate his music? Doesn’t matter. Aubrey Graham aka Drake just made another huge statement with the release of Take Care. He sold 659,190 copies first week and comfortably has the #1 album in the country. He won. Expect that number […]
**UPDATE: Official figure is in via Billboard: 164,062 units. Big congratulations for a solid sophomore debut of roughly 163k (162,660K exactly) copies sold of Ambition for its first week. This number will probably be altered very slightly when Billboard posts the exact figures tomorrow. I’m sure he wanted that #1 spot, but Bieber fans solidified […]
As the year heads into its home stretch, things are looking up for the U.S. music industry – sales are on track to increase over the previous year, something that hasn’t happened since 2004. With nine months of 2011 down, album sales stand at 228.5 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan — up 3.3% from the […]
Gigantic congrats to J.Cole for not only coming in at #1, but landing over 200k for his debut album. The 217k figure may vary slightly, as Billboard will release the exact figure tomorrow morning (I believe), but not by too much. Looking forward to hearing more from the kid as his stock continues to rise. […]
***EDIT: Watch for J. Cole to debut atop the Billboard 200 next week with his first album “Cole World: the Sideline Story,” which could move as many as 240,000 to 250,000 copies by week’s end on Oct. 2, so say industry prognosticators. Via Billboard HDD, who is known for making fairly accurate sales projections based […]
Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter IV” easily holds at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a second week, as it sells another 219,000 (down 77%), according to Nielsen SoundScan. It arrived atop the list with 964,000 last week — 2011’s second-largest sales frame. Congrats on another platinum release, Mr. Carter.
***UPDATE: Billboard reports that Niesen Soundscan official figures are in: 964k I’m sorry but I’m having a very difficult time that these numbers are accurate. Wayne has had a few singles that have been mild successes – nothing CLOSE to what “Lollipop” pulled for Tha Carter III. Tha Carter IV has already had a negative […]
Who says album sales are down? Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter IV could have the second-biggest sales week of the year, as industry forecasters suggest it may sell 700,000-850,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Sept. 4. It’s crazy to me how Wayne extends beyond hip hop, whereas Kanye West and Jay-Z […]
Watch the Throne will top the Billboard charts with 436, 079 cumulative digital & physical sales. Keep in mind that Best Buy holds the rights to physical version until the 23rd, so expect sales to keep going. The digital vs. physical first week breakdown: Digital: 320,893 Physical: 115,186 Also keep in mind that the 115k […]
While everyone is focusing on the iPad and iPhone, Apple’s iTunes posted a 27% increase in digital sales this past quarter with $1.4 million. Though we can’t directly attribute this to music sales at the moment, one could assume it’s being fueled by movie/TV/apps/games as well. One thing is for sure, Apple keeps winning with […]
Lupe Fiasco sits comfortably at the #1 spot for this weeks album sales. Although Hits Daily Double is usually off by a few thousand (give or take), it’s a great indicator that he cracked over 200k buys. Also significant is that this makes Lasers his best-selling album to date (first week sales). What does this […]
The ‘worth’ of platinum in the music industry has been cheapened a bit with the digital age, but I won’t take that away for artists like Wiz who are doing their thing. He has created a great lane for himself and has worked hard to get where he’s at. Congrats, Wiz kid.
