NY Times Profiles The Roots

The Roots’ daily gig as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon doesn’t keep them from playing huge shows in Prospect Park or DJ-ing in Williamsburg. Melena Ryzik reports. Pretty good profile piece on a day in the life of The Roots.

The Roots ft. John Legend – The Fire (music video)

One of my favorite singles and songs of the year. The vibe, the chorus, the lyrics. Just love everything about it. Rik Cordero puts an unexpected twist on the song by releasing this war-themed music video. My thoughts on the song were a little more literal, but this gives a different meaning to “The Fire.”

Oh, and that white box is supposed to represent the “key to survival.”

Cassidy – Get My Paper Up

I’m usually pretty indifferent when it comes to tracks from Cassidy, but I actually like this song as his single for his upcoming album. The instrumental sets it off, in my opinion. Good stuff.

The Roots – The Fire (Music Video Trailer)

Nowadays it usually goes:
1) Behind the scenes pics
2) Behind the scenes video
3) Music Video Trailer
4) Music Video

But I’m happy we are seeing some visuals for “The Fire,” which is one of my favorite singles at the moment. Not what I imagined to be, but this looks like sort of an epic vid from Rik Cordero. The Roots do not appear in the final cut. How I Got Over in stores now.

J.Cole Performs with Freeway in Philly

J. Cole performs ‘Last Call’, then begins ‘Roc the Mic’ and brings Freeway out.Freeway performs ‘Roc the Mic’ and then goes into ‘What We Do.’ This is at the Heineken event, which is touring the country. I believe Wale and J.Cole are performing at the NYC leg in a weekend or two.

John Legend & The Roots’ Album Cover for “Wake Up!”

RapUp just posted the official cover for the Legend & Roots collaboration project, called Wake Up! Really looking forward to this, even though it’s covers – but how can you deny John Legend and The Roots taking on classic records??? If you didn’t see, The Roots, John Legend, Common, and Melanie Fiona were shooting a music video the other day for the album. Also, here is the tracklist.

ALSO – John Legend took a moment to talk to the Huffington Post’s Samantha Zalaznick about why they decided to do this album:

We were kinda inspired by what was going on with the election and all the increased levels of activism and optimism, and we wanted to make an album that captured that sentiment. It came together as something that’s really soulful, really timely and really reflective of the moment that we’re still in right now, I think, because it reflects a lot of the frustrations as well as the optimism of this moment. Look at the song ‘Wake Up Everybody,’ which is the first single from the album. The main subjects it addresses are the education, the environment and health care, and as we all know those subjects are still quite relevant and contested territory.

Full intv here.

Pics from The Roots X John Legend “Wake Up Everybody” Music Video

I noticed ?uestlove tweeting some pics early this morning, but I finally got a chance to check out what he had been talking about. Looks like they’re filming a music video for their “Wake Up Everybody” 2010 cover off of their cover album, Wake Up! Both Common and Melanie Fiona are involved in this music video shoot (and song). Behind the Scenes Pics: The Roots’ “The Fire”

I think of a much more uplifting theme when I hear this song, but I’ll reserve full judgment until I see Rik Cordero’s music video for my favorite song right now, “The Fire.” Apparently it’s a World War II themed video that The Roots don’t appear in. This track is off of The Roots’ How I Got Over album and features John Legend.

Jakk Frost – Chasing Doe

The bearded guy from Philly releases another jam via HHU friend Sermon. I’m not sure if Frost will really achieve mainstream success, but for what he does, I think he makes some quality music for the 2-1-5. Jakk of All Trades mixtape coming soon.

HHU Exclusive Intv: Chiddy Bang (Part 2)

In part two of our Intv with Chiddy Bang, we get the low down on a potential collabo with a historic British punk band member, the origins of the word “swelly,” some exclusive info on the debut album, and much more.

Thanks to Taylor, Chiddy, Xaphoon, Kisha, Sascha, Sarah, and Z

If you missed it, check out Part 1 Below:

TheHipHopUpdate.com’s Taylor sits down with Chiddy Bang in LA to talk about a number of subjects. The guys talk headlining their own tour, the importance of their show at Swarthmore College (PA) and Kanye’s “Power” single. Additionally they speak on why they love sampling/remixing music put out by UK artists and Xaphoon’s basketball incident.

HHU Intv: Chiddy Bang (Part 1)

HHU has been supporting Chiddy Bang ever since I was introduced to them by some HHU twitter followers right as the site relaunched back in March. In fact, their Ellie Goulding remix was one of the first tracks I posted.

Similar to what I set out to do when I was one of the first to feature Kid Cudi, Wale and Wiz Khalifa music (it’s just a fact), I hope to help spread the good word in the Chiddy Bang movement. After one missed attempt (Thanks Diego), HHU’s resident LA intvr Taylor got a chance to catch up with the guys.
