Pharrell on the new album, Nothing:

We wanted to make it like a lifestyle. Lifestyle music. [And] girls can get freaky to it. Most of the album is like the Doors meets America.

On former [brief] bandmate Rhea:

We experimented with it. That was our first batch of records, and it was good, but wasn’t good enough, and we were like, ‘Naw, let’s not do this.’ There’s no bad blood. Rhea’s still featured in certain places on the record, but the members of N.E.R.D. are Shay [Haley], Chad, and myself.

The folks over at MADE had an opportunity to sit down chat with Pharrell and Shay not too long ago. While there, they the two visionaries talked about their passion, side projects and the elements that drive them to success.

Not that they ever really utilized the Fergie of the group for anything substantial. At least Pharrell isn’t kicking her to the curb.

Pharrell says his rap-rock trio “experimented” with an additional band mate, singer Rhea. Says Pharrell: “She needed her own band to do the kind of music that she does, which is R&B.”

The 37-year-old Pharrell is producing Rhea’s album. He says it is “turning out incredible.” Rhea performs with her band Jealous Lover.

We had one phrase that we had from Pharrell and we made it into a whole song,” explains Axwell, with Angello adding that “it’s kind of old skool, chopping up one vocal and turning it into a whole dance track.” The video for One, which you can watch above, is noteworthy for its prominent use of Teenage Engineering’s forthcoming OP-1, which should raise the profile of this synth/sampler/controller – not to mention the anticipation level ahead of its release – considerably.

Pharrell stopped by Chelsea Handler’s show, Chelsea Lately, and got a handful of some Handler goodness. Well done, Pharrell.

Pharrell steps across the pond to collaborate with Electro-pop based Uffie. I thought she was from England, but it turns out she was born in Miami and is an artist out of France now.

Electro-House group Swedish House Mafia recruits Pharrell for their latest track, “One.” Not much, lyrics wise, for Pharrell, but this is kind of the equivalent of Kid Cudi jumping on David Guetta’s “Memories.” I’m kinda liking this, myself. Interesting. Looks like Pharrell and Co. took this old Rolls Royce for a spin on the set of the new video for “Hot N Fun,” with Nelly Furtado. I was gonna say that was painted by artist KAWS, but the BBC blog says it was done by Friends With You. If you haven’t already checked out the song, click here.

Things are a-movin for Game as he’s about to drop a vid for his street single, “Shake,”  he just dropped the Red Room mixtape and now we have his first mainstream single, “Ain’t No Doubt.” It’s obvious that he and Pharrell knew exactly what they were getting themselves in to when they invited Timberlake to be on the track. Crossover appeal, people.

I can’t sat that I’m the biggest N.E.R.D. fan, but I can respect their overall music and what they bring to the table. Regardless, here is their first single off of their upcoming album, Nothing. Nelly Furtado gets a chance to shine on this as well. Check it out, folks:

You take away the unecessary beefin, dissin, bullish, and you leave a dope rapper named The Game. This joint is a solid effort. And with Pharrell Executive producing Game’s album, I’m excited to see what will be the final product. Check it out.
