My Life: Memphis Meets NYC as FreeSol Takes Webster Hall
Though I get music sent to me every day – so much that I can’t listen or go through everything – I also find out about artists/bands through pretty traditional outlets. I first heard of FreeSol by way of HBO’s Entourage utilizing their song, “Don’t Give it Away,” in the closing credits of one of their intense episodes. The net went crazy for the song. Props to Scott Vener.
A year later, I’m checking for their music because I think it has a lot of potential. Click below to check out my pictures and recap of their show last night at NYC’s historic Webster Hall:
Still an up and coming group, the Memphis-based group took NYC by storm as they filled The Studio room of Webster Hall with the booming sounds of their band.
The band, formed in 2003 consists of the lead MC, Free, Elliott Ives (guitar/vocals), Premo D’Anger (bass), and Kickman Teddy (drums). Elliott Ives wasn’t in attendance last night, however. DJ Charlie White took control of the turntables. The instrumentation was fluid as it mixed perfectly with the lead vocals of Free.
Together, the four members of FreeSol performed about eight or so tracks from their catalog for a short, but effective set that was capped off by their upcoming album single with Justin Timberlake, “Hoodies On, Hats Low.”
The single will be included on their upcoming album on Timberlake’s label, Tenman Records, which is a division of Interscope. All I’ve gotta say is that the single, as well as the rest of the material, has HUGE potential for mainstream appeal.
If you need a comparison, I feel like FreeSol reminds me a lot of K-OS, out of Canada, or something that Mayday, out of Miami, are doing with their movement. Rock, hip hop, blues, and more: FreeSol has something for everyone. Be on the lookout for more material from these guys this Fall heading in to 2012.
