With that said, some shows work out great. I can get media passes and get right in to get some great shots for HHU. Others, like the Fool’s Gold party were half-fail’s. Click to read on:

Yea, so I showed up at the City Winery in NYC for this hyped Fool’s Gold party with a slew of artists on the bill. Show up and I realize the line is around the corner and IT IS NOT MOVING. With that in mind, I checked all my resources to try and get in, but nothing worked. Big up to my boy Wos for trying to help me out.

Walking around the block trying to find other entrances, I spotted the infamous Lowkey exiting the scene because this dude has no tolerance for lines haha. Walk around and realize the line is still not moving and it’s even longer. Waited around to see if it moved. Nope. How are you gonna have a gigantic venue that’s not even close to being filled and just make people stand in line for an hour without moving? So I quit. Maybe I’m petty. Or impatient like Lowkey. I headed to Pier 40 to take pics, like the one above.

Pier 40 is one of my favorite piers to loiter on, because there are so many great points to look out on to the city/water. Can’t beat the serenity of a setting sun over the big city.

Even with the sun setting, there was still decent light (for a short time) back at the Fool’s Gold Fest. Decided to give it one more shot and, surprise surprise, no more line at 7:15 (it started at 2, I originally got there at 4:30 and it ended at 8). At that point, it was more about catching up with friends and showing my face. Caught the end of Donnis’ set (last song he performed was “Gone,” I believe) as well.

One great thing I was glad I got to catch was Yelawolf performing at the end. I haven’t ever seen him perform live before and I was thoroughly impressed by the energy he brought to the crowd. I’m not 100% familiar with his songs, by name, but the ones I did recognize were spot on. Definitely recommend checking him out if he’s in your city performing.

All in all, it was a frustrating fail at the beginning of  the event, but it all worked out in the end even though I only caught the last 45 minutes or so. Maybe I need to work on my patience? Probably. I was actually told that the line didn’t move until a little bit before I got there….hate to say it, but a lot of people left during Pill’s set (I was told), I guess freeing up room for the line. Interesting.

Shout to Wos, Naud, Matt C, Emeka, A-Trak, FB, Dan S, and others I saw there.  Also, shout to the two people who came up to me and I honestly had no idea who you were, but I played along anyway.

Rook: “We met [Ross] through our managers. They had relationships with Ross and his managers. They came to the house, listened to a bunch a beats, but when he heard the ‘Maybach Music’ track, he was immediately like, ‘Yo, I’m going to call this song ‘Maybach Music’ and I’m going to put Jay-Z on it.’ As soon as he heard it, we were in business for the whole movement.

“Originally the track sampled Friends of Distinction’s ‘And I Love Him,’ which was a cover song of a Beatles song [called] ’And I Love Her.’ [We] went back and forth with the Beatles publishing company, Sony ATV, just to make sure that we did not infringe on their copyright. We have about 5 different version of ‘Maybach Music.’ Basically we had to completely take out that sample and rearrange, rethink, and redo how it was. We just had to make sure that everything was completely different while keeping the same vibe of the original track that Ross loves so much. It ended up being a classic. From that song on, it influenced us to do that with damn near every song that we do so we don’t have to clear samples.”

What’s good people?  They call me Jefe, and I’m just a humble music blogger with a brand new site – Bigger Than Hip Hop.  I was front row at Big Boi’s concert last night, and my man J.D. was kind enough to let me post my thoughts on the show and a couple videos here, where someone will actually watch them…

I need to start of by saying that this review will sting a little…  I wish I could just go on and on about how amazing the show was, but for some reason I was a little disappointed.  I think that’s my own fault as a fan, but more on that later.

Outkast is the reason I love music, and in my emcee book, Big Boi is top 5 dead or alive (maybe top 10).  He brings crazy energy when he performs, and nobody can dispute Outkast/Big Boi’s unbelievable music catalog.  No question about it, Big Boi brought the hype last night and performed just about every track you could have hoped for.

So why was I let down?  I expect more from an artist on stage these days.  Take Wale as an example: he brought two fans on stage a couple weeks ago to film the show, was interacting with the crowd the whole time, and stuck around after to sign some autographs.  Is that the norm?  No.  Should it be?  Maybe.  Thanks to Twitter/social media, it feels like there is less of a barrier between artists and their fans.  Or at least it’s a lot easier to cross that barrier.  But is it really fair to expect constant interaction between an artist and their fans?  Hell no.  Everyone needs their space, right?  Well, Big Boi’s space is the stage, and he owned it.  So I’m sorry Big, I wasn’t disappointed, I’m just spoiled.
