You Wanna Good Job/Internship? Here Ya Go:
I don’t really know why I am doing this. I guess because people ask me what I do, how do I get to go to whatever events I go to, can I help them with a job etc? Perhaps? Obvious answer is nah, I don’t have the time. However, I have linked certain people with other people in positions of power and I have given out some advice to some younger folk. I do go out of my way for people who I’ve known for a bit and people who seem sincere in their inquiries.
So my very quick advice on WHERE to find jobs is as follows:
A) I have NO IDEA why people don’t get that most big name companies have a specific job page within their site. Monster.com and all those other places suck, generally (UNLESS you’re looking for a more local, smaller city/town job). Go straight to the source. Most companies have tabs with “jobs” or “careers” as their label. I really have no idea why people don’t understand that.
B) The two best resources that I have personally used (for my type of industry – print, media, marketing, etc) are Mediabistro and Entertainmentcareers.net. They are both updated daily with MANY jobs and internships all compiled in to one spot. I think with mediabistro you just need to register to see all the listings and with the other site, like 95% are viewable to anyone. The other 5% are for premium members or something along those lines.
That’s pretty much it.
Here are a few quick things I found in different cities. You can do the rest:
LA – Studio 43 Intern, NBC Researcher Last Call, Universal Music Digital Fulfillment, EMI Digital Video, Editor Intern SKEE TV (DJ Skee), MTV Music Assistant,
NY – Universal Music A&R Coordinator, Complex Mag Digital Intern,NUE Agency Intern (I recommend this), Atlantic Records Digital Media Assistant, Universal Music Group Intern, MTV Marketing Manager, VH1 Digital Research,
ATL – DV8 Urban Mag Graphic Designer, Freelance writer Sneakers/Fashion DV8, CRUNK Mag Writer,
DC – Studio 43 Intern
MTV INTERNSHIPS SITE - Year round internships for Burbank, Chicago, Santa Monica, New York, Glendale, Nashville, Miami, Orlando.
Those are just a few examples. Note that most big industry jobs are in big industry locations. That’s why, if you browse, most stuff will be in NYC and LA. Then the second industry tier is like ATL & Chicago, followed by (I’d guess) Philly, Miami, San Fran, DC. It’s just how it is, unfortunately, for a lot of people.
With that said, many companies offer internships and “college reps” for other cities. I’m not 100% sure how they work because I never did one, but I’d check um out if I were you.
Closing note – I ALWAYS stress to people that getting A+’s and 4.0′s in school means NOTHING if you don’t have relevant work experience. Get it in, people. It’ll pay off in the end. I guess if you have any questions, comment below. Otherwise, I’m sick of staring at my computer screen all night. See ya.

In regards to internships a further note to J.D.’s “how to break into the industry” post, pick up a copy of Billboard’s International Buyer’s Guide or Pollstar also has a good industry guide. The guides cost in the $200 range (go half with a friend or maybe your school library has one), but they are great source for phone numbers/emails to key people in the music industry. Pick companies, call around and ask if they have a internship program. You might get lucky.
